As it is, I am about to raise all kinds of holy hell.
So, story time. When I go to the gym, when I'm doing the cardio machines like the treadmill or the stationary bike, I like to watch videos online via my phone. Music doesn't keep me focused, and the TVs they provide are... not entertaining. There's 3; one shows whatever sporting event is on that night or a cooking show (at a gym, how nice. I just love watching someone make carrot cake while I work out), one shows CNN, and one shows Fox News. I don't want to watch any of that, so I watch videos.
I've been using this gym for about ten years now and this has never been an issue. I connect to their wifi, I hop on a machine, and the video extravaganza begins. Tonight was different.
I selected a video I had saved for gym time, and it was from Timcast. Timcast is a left of center, I guess, journalist. He had a video I was curious about up, so I taped it and something came up saying it was restricted. I figured... OK. Maybe he's got a weird setting on. So I went for a Steven Crowder video. Same thing. Joe Rogan. Mundane Matt. Slightly Offens*ve. Styxhexenhammer666. The Quartering. All had the same thing saying it was restricted. I backed out and closed all the apps and tried again, still restricted. I thought maybe the issue was with YouTube.
Then I clicked on Good Mythical Morning! No problem! It played right away! I tried some horror channels I followed and the videos played. Weird.
Then I shut off the wifi and opened the Timcast video on data; no problem, it played. I hooked the wifi back up while it played and all was good. When that was over, I clicked one of Steven Crowder's "Change my Mind" videos and it was restricted. Shut off the wifi, hit play again, and it ran. Reconnected the wifi and it kept playing.
Apparently, I need to select these videos in data and then turn on the wifi to get the videos to play. This is new, as of tonight.
See, here's the thing. This is a hospital based gym. There are no kids at this gym, and the majority of their clientele is middle aged to senior citizen. College kids are few and far between and we don't have the grunting meat heads you get at a lot of gyms. These are all people with disabilities and medical conditions, or people like me who just don't want to deal with the bs associated with regular gyms.
I am also a grown woman. So please, don't tell me what I can and cannot watch while I use your facility. I can understand wanting to restrict porn sites and all because of the chance of sending viruses and malware through the system. But I was on frickin' YouTube. And it wasn't the entire sight that was blocked, only select creators. Now, neither Timcast nor Joe Rogan are right wingers. The Quartering does politics, but he's heavy in gaming and comic book stuff. So I assume there is something in their tags or whatever that is being blocked. But even when I went to my "Watch Later" folder, it said I had seven videos and only three actually appeared. The three that appeared were rather "fluffy" videos.
So I am about to raise holy hell with their management about selecting what can and cannot come through on my phone for me to watch. I'm not blasting it for everyone to hear, I have really good headphones. And they obviously don't have an issue with news videos since they have CNN and Fox News on their own TVs. So what gives? What was wrong with Timcast? And Steven Crowder? And anyone else I choose to watch while I workout in a facility that I pay more than I probably should to use?
I just hope this doesn't become a trend. Hotels. Airports. Various waiting rooms. I'm an adult. I can make my own decisions, and I'll watch whoever I want to watch.
And your restrictions are really weak.
