I just want to take a moment to address a tactic the pro-gunners are using that I personally believe is so useless we need to move on.
"Well, I don't know what an assault rifle is, so this means nothing."
"If the law passes it won't do anything. There's no such thing as an assault rifle."
"Assault is an action not an object."
OK, we get it. I don't like the term assault rifle or assault weapon either. But here's the bottom line - the term isn't going anywhere. It has become ingrained in society to the point where everyone knows what it means. At this point, arguing over the title isn't going to stop laws or change the minds of anyone. Laws are being written while we argue over what to call it. The anti-gunners don't care.
Every bill that has been put forward to ban guns has listed specific guns. So whether they use a made up name for the type of weapon is really completely irrelevant. The most recent one has 200+ specific weapons by their formal names on it. Is forcing the public to say "semi-automatic rifle" going to prevent those specific weapons from being banned? We can't even get them to understand what "semi-automatic" means.
It's time to move on. Like I said, it's pretty ingrained in society now, whether you like it or not. And, frankly, we have bigger fish to fry than correcting their grammar. I'm more concerned with stopping bans and stupid laws than correcting titles. And yes, your favorite gun will still be banned even if they call it something you don't approve of.
Go for the bigger fight.
